A few things you probably don't know about dA

Fri Apr 3, 2009, 3:56 PM
:bulletblack: dA can re-use and modify your deviations. Article 16 of the Terms of Service: "you grant to deviantART a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, re-format, store, prepare derivative works based on, and publicly display and perform Your Content."

:bulletblack: dA can let other companies use your deviations. Article 16 of the Terms of Service: "third parties will be able to copy, distribute and display your Content using readily available tools on their computers."

:bulletblack: You can not cancel your dA account. FAQ #113: "Accounts cannot be deleted as the coding of our website does not allow for this." FAQ #201: "We will not close an account simply due to a lack of activity."

:bulletblack: You can not quickly delete all of your deviations in your gallery. FAQ #10: "If you wish to remove your deviations, then you will need to delete them individually."

Needless to say it's a tiresome process. While deleting my past 4 years of deviations I was stopped several times by different kinds of errors. It's as if they've done everything they can to make it as inconvenient as possible to discourage users from deleting their deviations.

:bulletblack: Even after you delete your deviations, dA may still hold onto them. Article 18 of the Terms of Service states that dA "may establish limits concerning your use of the Service, including without limitation the maximum number of days that Your Content will be retained by the Service."

:bulletblack: Deviations that you have deleted in the past may still be stored on the site. To see submissions that you may have deleted, visit your Gallery Management page.

I had the unpleasant experience of having previously deleted photos of people I no longer wished to be associated with publicly showing in my gallery without my knowledge.

:bulletblack: dA can change their License and Terms of Service at any time without notifying you. Article 10 in the Terms of Service: "We reserve the right to amend these Terms from time to time in our sole discretion" It goes on to say "If you continue to use the Service after the effective date of the revised Terms, you will be deemed to have accepted those changes. If you do not agree to the revised Terms, your sole remedy shall be to discontinue using the Service." (Except that you can't cancel your dA account...)

***I have deleted all of the content from in gallery. If you still see anything, please let me know.***
